FUNDECOIPA owns and manage a 2625 acre large reserve that surrounds the community Arútam. The community and reserve is located at the base of the Andean Foothills at an altitude varying from 600 to 1000 meters above sea level.The reserve lies in one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots. The reserve is connected to another 250.000 acres of communally owned forest which stretches towards the undisturbed forest into Peru and Brazil.


The flora is extremely varied with everything from ferns to mahogany, palms, bromeliads and an overwhelming variety of orchids. The fauna is just as varied and some of the mammal species recently recorded in the forest include pumas, peccaries, howler monkeys, saki monkeys, tamarind monkeys, deer, ocelots, sloth’s and anteaters. The forest is a birdwatchers paradise where you can observe toucans, parrots, parakeets, tanagers, woodpeckers, eagles, hummingbirds and a vast array of other beautiful and rare birds.
